Most metals do not react with strong alkali.
Only a few metals can react with strong alkali to give hydrogen gas, and such metals are known as amphoteric metals. Aluminium and zinc are two common examples of amphoteric metals.
The equation for the reaction of aluminium with sodium hydroxide solution:
2Al(s) + 2OH-(aq) + 6H2O(l) → 2[Al(OH)4]-(aq) + 3H2(g)
The equation for the reaction of zin with potassium hydroxide solution:
Zn(s) + 2OH-(aq) + 2H2O(l) → 2[Zn(OH)4]2-(aq) + H2(g)
