Now, since I am on a computer and not a piece of paper I have to do this in my head. This is what I would do.

First get a piece of paper.

on the piece of paper, draw a line and place point A on the left side of the line, point B in the middle, and point C on the right (ignore the dots seperating the letters):
.______._______.
A ........B...........C

Then below the line, draw a mini line from point A to point B. Label that X. Again, draw a mini line from point B to point C and label that y:

A...........B...........C
|------------| |-----------|
......x...........y.......

Then if you add a plus sign between x and y and an equal sign after y your problem should now look like this:

x+y=

now i think that since x and y are two different variables you can't add them together, but think about what your teacher said to do in class, or refer back to the beginning of the chapter in your book and it will provide examples for you to look at.

I'm pretty sure it's x+y. But I HATE MATH WITH A PASSION! Numbers make me want to throw up. :P Words cannot describe how much I hate math.
