Examples of uses and differences:

afraid恐懼，不一定有事發生過------> frightened受驚嚇, 有事發生過------>scared受嚇後,+怕怕

afraid
-恐怕 eg I am afraid that I cannot help you.
-恐懼，不一定有事發生過 eg I am afraid of dogs

frightened
-受驚嚇 eg I was frightened by the thunder in my sleep last night.

scared
-受嚇後怕怕 eg After bitten by a dog last year, the little boy is scared of all animals.
