Back in 1959, Kwun Tong was still a hilly coastal strip as seen in this map, which shows Chui Ping Estate on the left, the Kwun Tong town centre in the front, the industrial area in the middle and Garden Building in the right. These building are still there, while the area surrounding them has developed into a vibrant city.
In 1960, the one-year-old Garden Building was among the first batch of public housing estates in Hong Kong. It was developed by the HK Housing Society to tie in with the development of industrial area by the sea in Kwun Tong, where more and more people moved into the area to work and live.
This is the image of Kwun Tong Resettlement Area. Also known as "Kai Liu", it was one of the oldest resettlement area in the district. Packed with small and crowded residential units, residents of the area had to cook outside the house, share the bathrooms and get water from public water hose. The roofs of the buildings were usually occupied by schools or community organisations. Kai Liu is now redeveloped in to Chui Ping Estate.

In 1970, the 15th block of Lam Tin Estate, an old-style housing estate block, took the credit of being the 500th public housing block built by the Works Department. A commemoration ceremony was held, for which the image of a flying dragon was painted on the outside wall of the building. The image has become a source of some folklores in the vicinity.

This is the image of a cleaning campaign in a school in Jordan Valley, a large-scale resettlement area in 1974. In 1983, to tie in with the development of Ngau Tau Kok, the resettlement area and industrial buildings were demolished to make room for the present-day Ngau Tau Kok bus terminal.

This is the image of family life in Kwun Tong in 1975. It was common for housewives to engage in cottage industry at home, mainly in machine-sewing, while taking care of the family.
