HISTORY Research Paper

Instructions: This research assignment requires you to gather, organize and analyze the material that will support your answers. The information can come from the Internet, books, the text book, and articles. The paper needs to have a resources page included. At least four resources need to be included. Make sure not to use encyclopedias as resources (Wikipedia, Encarta, ect…). Specific quotes need to be cited with a page number. Example: The Las Angeles Timesstated that “…one-third of American children are obese”. (Adams 17) This assignment also needs to be a typed, 5-6 pages, and double-spaced. Anything shorter than this will automatically have points deducted. Also, this paper will be graded for grammatical errors. Mainly, I am looking to see how well the paper flows. Finally, the paper will be graded on how effectively the author addresses all of the criteria mentioned above.

Questions:
1. Transportation has always been instrumental in supporting the American economy and increasing production. By the late 1880’s the railroad industry was the main source of transportation in the United States. First, pick one industry from the period and answer the following:
A. Describe how the railroad industry helped transport the product to the factory and then to the market place.
B.Describe if a labor force was needed and if the railroad was instrumental in transporting these folks.


2. Second, how powerful did the railroad industry become by the late 1800s? Where there any attempts by the United States government to break up and/or control the railroad industry?
Finally, do you think that the railroad industry was an important factor to help support the industrial boom in the United States during the second half of the 19th century? Explain why and use research to support your ideas.
