Actually there is not really much to see in Chennai (or Madras). There are several Hindu Temples, like Kapaleeshwarar Temple, Ramakrishna Mutt Temple and some British raj era architecture like San Thome Cathedral.
I was there in May 2008 and you can meet some tourist overthere as they also stopped over here from Pondicherry (2 1/2 hours by bus from Chennai). For solo female traveler, just stick to conservative dress code and walking at the main path. Since Chennai is the 3rd largest city in India, you will expect poverty and slum scattered at different places within the city.
The town itself is okay not dangerous but the annoyance is the overcharged autorickshaw drivers that really drive you crazy, spend some times in advance for bargaining.
