Wash all soft furnishings (curtains etc) and shampoo carpets. Then wash down the walls with a gentle solution of sugar soap.

I moved into an apartment one time that smelled like smoke something awful! People at my work were asking me if I started smoking that's how bad it was. The only way I could get the smell out of the carpet was to buy some baking soda.....sprinkle it all over the floor.....walk around on the floor dragging your feet (rubbing the baking soda into the carpet). Leave the baking soda down for at least 24 hours then vacuum it up. You may have to do it a couple times, but that's the only way it worked for me.

Yea like putting a band aid on the smoke to make it go away,
cleaning a carpet is not going to make the smell go away.
that needs to be done however,as well as painting, the smell is in the walls as well as evey where else in the apt, do you know what a ozone Machine is?, that needs to run in your apt for a day or 2 to get the smell out , if she won't do it because it cost $$, some Constitution Restoration Company's have these machines to take care of it . .

If noting else open all the windows Spray the heck out of the rooms and air out ;)

You have to wash all the rugs and there is a new paint out by sherwin williams that has baking soda in it.. it will kill any smell there and will prevent any smells from coming back.

I had a similar problem in the house I bought. I ended up tearing up the carpet in the large family room where the previous owner was allowed to smoke. I had to paint the walls and ceiling with KILZ (a primer) to seal the surfaces, because the walls and ceiling were covered with nicotine and stunk to high heaven even after the carpet was pulled up.

Keep in mind that smoke rises. The carpet smells, yes, but the smell settles on the ceiling and walls. Plaster and drywall are very absorbent. So are wallpaper and paneling.

Cleaning the carpet will probably help. But I would still expect there to be some smell. Have the landlady write something in agreeing to PRIME and paint the walls and ceilings if the smell isn't gone after the carpets are steamed. The odor is her problem, not yours.

Good luck.

Will they be painting, or washing the walls, washing the wood work, cleaning the vents, washing the windows?

That should "pretty much" do it--unless you're one of those hyper-sensitive types.

If you have a popcorn ceiling there might be some of the stink stuck up there, if the place was used as a smoking lounge.

Just like how people put baking soda in their fridge, sprinkle baking soda onto the carpet and then vacuum. Try the ones for pet odor. It worked with my place.

Vanilla candles. I buy properties and don't allow smoking in my units.. but often have to buy smoky ones. So cleaning the carpet, mop the walls (use a brand new mop not used on floors or swiffer) and get an extra large vanilla candle that is potent and let it burn down.
