Say I am interested in finding out about websites. The domain name has been registered and it is hosted.
This is a travel website if that is relevant.
This website is for information purposes/entertainment/etc.

Where can I go to find out things like

--different companies that will design what I have in mind and how much it will cost

--Can I figure out how much time would I need to invest in a month or week to keep it updated. Also, If I am wanting to outsource this, is there a job title for someone who maintains websites? How much does this typically cost?

10 points if you can answer these questions and also include any other information I may deem valuable.
thx!

they are very inexpensive and they will do it right. (they built my website) Now unlike other companies they include search engine optimization. Plus unlike some other companies they will create a content management system which will allow you to maintain your own website without any html. You can create a new page by just typing a name for the page and start writing an article (similar to yahoo answers). You can log in from any computer and just start editing your website.

1) You might want to check out your competitors' website to see who they use to design their website. Most web designers will leave a link-back to their own site on their client's pages. Another place you can try is search engines and look for "web designers" or "freelance web designers". Try to stay away from design firms as they do cost more money. Freelance designers can give you the same quality at a much lower cost.
2) Depends on how much you know about web designing/up-keeping. It also depends on the website that your web designer has created. If s/he made you a website using a CMS (ie. Joomla or Wordpress) as base, then it's easy for you to update the website yourself. If you are planning on outsourcing the task, then you'll be looking for a "webmaster" or "webmistress"

I dabble in web design time and again so maybe I can help. Usually when I have questions like yours the first place I stop by is sitepoint.com. This is a full-fledged web developer community equipped with a design forum called 99designs.com, where you can find everything from a web designer to logo and print designers as well. Best of all, it is a contest setting, which means you pitch the idea and many, sometimes dozens or more, designers try to create your vision, all for a fraction of what you may pay a freelancer or studio. Now, don't misunderstand, these guys are professionals as well and you'll get that impression from just cruising around and taking a look at the work that is created there on a daily basis. Sitepoint has just set it up so that it's a cost-effective way for people like you, who probably either don't have tons of money to throw at your idea, or just don't want to, to get quality work. So I'll formally try to answer all of your questions in the links below...

1. different companies that will design what I have in mind and how much it will cost

A. http://99designs.com/categories/web-page-design-un-coded

2. Can I figure out how much time would I need to invest in a month or week to keep it updated. Also, If I am wanting to outsource this, is there a job title for someone who maintains websites? How much does this typically cost?

A. This question is a little tougher to answer since things like these tend to vary with the site. As far as how much time it will take you in a month to keep the site updated depends on how much information you provide on the site, will the site have video and if so what kind. If it's a travel site, maybe you'd want to show video clips of different destinations. Eventually, you'll want to switch those out if you're not promoting a particular place anymore. The more often you do this, the more time it will require. It typically took me about 12-14 hrs to design and code 1 page that contained video clips such as the one you mention. The job title of the person that would handle the creation of the site would be a web designer / developer. The difference is one person designs the site, another may code the page to function the way that designer has...well...designed it. Sometimes 1 person does both but it can be rare. As far as cost goes, again it can range from a few hundred to thousands of dollars depending on what you need the site to do.

One of the most important things, I think, one should take into consideration when dealing with a site such as yours is, "NEVER EVER GO WITH THE FIRST PERSON UNLESS YOU ARE ABSOLUTE POSITIVE THAT YOU FEEL COMFORTABLE WITH THE LEVEL OF PROFESSIONALISM, WORK ETHIC AND PORTFOLIO." This is a huge step! Call around, ask questions; then call more places and ask more questions. Gather as much information as you can before making a decision. You'll have to sign a contract and the last thing you need is to get stuck with a shotty web developer or studio that made a really great first impression but will never follow through. Here are some things that you should look out for.

1. Look at the developer portfolios. These are usually on the developers site.

2. Developers usually provide links back to the sites that they have designed; If you like what you see, go to the site. Contact the client, let them know how attractive their site is and could you please ask them if they were/are satisfied with the level of service that they received from said developer.

3. Make a list of all your potential candidates.

4. Get as educated as possible. Unfortunately, there are some people who will try to take advantage of your ignorance on the subject and possibly attempt to sell you services you don't need.

I hope this helps, let me know how it turns out for you. Good luck!!
