then 4r + 12 - 3r
= r + 12
Expand the brackets then collect the like terms.
No problem at all.

4(r + 3) - 3r
= 4*r + 4*3 - 3r
= 4r + 12 - 3r
= 4r - 3r + 12
= r + 12

The word "Solve" applies to equations and equations require an = sign.

What you have is an Algebraic expression that has to be simplified.

4r + 12 - 3r
r + 12

Since there is no equal sign, all we're doing here is simplification.

(1) 4(r+3) - 3r
(2) 4r + 12 - 3r
(3) 4r - 3r +12
(4) r + 12

You really can't "solve" this expression because you don't have an equation. Thus, you haven't stated a problem or a question to be answered.

Answer: r + 12

Use the distributive property by multiplying 4 by r, and then 4 by 3 (4r and 12). So now the equation reads 4r + 12 - 3r. Combine like terms, by subtracting 3r from 4r (1r). Now the equation reads 1r + 12, which is the same as just r + 12.

Hope that helped! :)

Seth, my boy. You do not have an equation. what you have is an expression. Any way I'll solve an equation of what I think you mean.

4(r+3)-3r = 0 (This is an equation!)
4r + 12 - 3r = 0
4r - 3r = -12
r = -12

I hope you know now what is an equation (which may be solved) is,

removing the brackets you have
4(r+3)-3r becomes 4r+12-3r or r+12, since you did not have an equivalent value...like = ?, it stops here.

I'll explain..
4(r+3)-3r
step one: Distributive property
4r+12-3r
step two: combine like terms
=r+12

there you go

4(r+3)-3r=
4r+12-3r=
r+12
