Most of the mountain ranges found on the surface of the earth are usually
formedin one of two ways. Both are results of activities in the earth's mantle,
which is the layer beneath the crust.
Mountains are formed by magmas, or molten rocks, which escape from
the earth's mantle through cracks in the crust. When the magma cools, it
forms rock. After accumulating cooled rocks over millions of years, mountains
are formed. The Hawaiian Island are a suburb example of this form of
volcanic activities.
The colliding of two continental plates is another way mountains are
formed. The collisions push the rock up wards, creating some of the planet's
highest mountains. The Himalayas, also referred to as the 'Roof of the World',
are formed from the colliding of India into the continent of Asia.
