what difference between who ; sort and who | sort in unix?

Hi everyone
I would like to ask the difference the commands shown above with semicolon and pipe, and I wonder if why there is no response when I type who | sort in console, I used putty to connect to my school and even tried to issue this command in RedHat Console. pls kindly give me an advice. thank you

The semi-colon tells tells the shell to execute both commands separately. The pipe tells it to send (or 'pipe') the output of the first command to second command as input.
