Most methylketones give positive results in iodoform test. A methylketone is an organic compound having the structure of a methyl group attached to a carbonyl group, i.e. CH3CO-

CH3CH2OH gives a positive result in iodoform test. This is because iodine is an oxidizing agent to oxidize some CH3CH2OH to ethanal (CH3CHO), which has the structure of methylketone.
Ethanal: CH3CO-H

CH3CH2CH2OH gives a negative result in iodoform test. This is because iodine oxidizes CH3CH2CH2OH to propanal (CH3CH2CHO), which does not have the structure of methylketone.
Propanal: CH3CH2CO-H
