How can I tell if my pup is going into heat?

Before anyone answers "spay her afterwards", I want you to know we will be spaying her eventually, she is a show dog, and we will be spaying her once she is finished and has produced a litter as a champion show dog, but not while she isn't a champion. I won't be breeding her, her breeder will.

Yesterday I gave my girl a bath, she is about 7 months old, and whenever I tried to blow-out her legs/underside of legs, she would flinch and immediatly try licking herself "down there". I thought nothing of it, but today I found staining around her area that wasn't there before, is this a possible sign of her going into/in heat?

She is a bit swollen, too.

I am a handler and a groomer, I just wanted clarification as this is the first ***** I've owned and I wanted to make sure. I won't be breeding her for a while, and I do know I have a LOT to learn about the wonderful world of conformation shows :P

That is a good point, I try not to use so much down there, but it's also a possibility. She was tender with her legs before I shampooed them, and was licking herself when I came home.

No males around. I know not to let her out of the house without a leash and to stay away from shows until it's all over.

She's a sealyham terrier, meaning the hair on her belly, legs, and muzzle aren't really touched, it's her back that would be prickly and itchy, and when we first got her groomed it was - she would bite at it and scratch, but now it's the hard wiry coat she needs and she's fine.

The hair on her belly, area, etc. is soft, not wiry.

Yes, sounds like she's coming into heat. If she's a very clean *****, she might be licking a lot and keeping herself really clean so you won't see any blood, so be extra careful. You should see the swelling, though.

Yes, she's going into heat. At first the flow is light for a day or so before it becomes red. She's the right age, too, not too early or too late, Good luck on your show dog, hope she racks up the point fast and you get the litter of champions that you want.

Probably she's in heat. That was my dogs first sign, she kept licking her swollen area. However, if you just bathed her, maybe too much shampoo irritated that area?

**ADD- oh, and depending on her breed, does she get groomed? I hate that they bath first, then cut... little hairs are everywhere and are ITCHY!!! For me, and my dog. :) They could have nicked the area down there too.

most likely, some dogs get tender down there and dont want anyone messing with them.

and if you found staining, it might be her discharge. shes at the age when most dogs go into heat for the first time.

Well, I have to say, since you already have a breeder lined up for this self-declared CH dog, then you should just be able to consult with her.

?????? ask your breeder.

One sign of estrus is that your dog will stand still and hold her tail to the side when you touch her back or when there's a male dog around.

well first of all how old is your dog and is there a male dog around? when your dog is going to heat she will get bigger and she will want to just lay around all day
