" an end in itself" means one does something just for the joy of it.

Example:

Learning how to make Thai food is an end in itself.
I just enjoy cooking and the dishes I make are often eaten by my family or friends.. I myself never eat what I cook.

" a means to another end" means someone does something on purpose( there
is a reason why he has to do it)

Example:
Learning how to sing is a means to another end.
I hope one day in the near future I will become a canto-pop singer in Hong
Kong.
( You are learning singing because you want to be a singer.That's the reason why you chose to learn how to sing.
)
