i believe you have to convert the whole number into a fraction with the same denominator

http://www.mathwizz.com/fractions/help/help11.htm
this site has a pretty simple explanation

For example:

40-(4/5) = (40/1)-(4/5) you need a common denominator so to get that you multiply by 5 ... 5x(40/1) = 200/1

now you can subtract (200/5)-(4/5) and only subtract the numberator...196/5 and make that into a whole number 39 and 1/5 remainder.

very simple sis. you simply make the whole number have a common denominator with the other numbers like so:

40*(5/5) - 4/5 5/5 is the same thing as one so it doesnt change
anything on the other side of the equation, repre-
sented by 'x'

200/5 - 4/5 = 196/5 = 39 1/5

you can do the same with the other questions

48*(3/3) - 2/3

144/3 - 2/3 = 142/3 = 47 1/3

and finally the last question

98*(7/7) - 3/7

686/7 - 3/7 = 683/7 = 97 4/7

there you have it :) nice and easy. nothing to frett about :D have a nice time doodling after acing that test sis!

ok..
heres the example

7 5 <<< what the bracket represents
5
40= 40/5= 8
so 8 - 4/5
but obviously a whole number cannot minus a fraction so; change your answer into a mixed number
so 8;convert it to 7(5/5) and then minus 4/5
you would get 7(1/5)

1)
40 - 4/5
= 40(5/5) - 4/5
= 200/5 - 4/5
= 196/5
= 39 1/5

2)
48 - 2/3
= 48(3/3) - 2/3
= 144/3 - 2/3
= 142/3
= 47 1/3

3)
98 - 3/7
= 98(7/7) - 3/7
= 686/7 - 3/7
= 683/7
= 97 4/7

1) 40- 4/5 = 39.2
Solution:

= 40/1 - 4/5 (suppose there is 1 under 40,now take LCM of 1and 5 the answer is 5))

=5x40 - 1x4 (5 divisable by 1 table,multiply with uper number)
¯¯¯5¯¯¯¯

=200 - 4
¯¯¯¯5¯¯¯

= 196
¯¯5¯¯

= 39.2Answer

2) 48-2/3

Solution ( short way)
=48/1-2/3
=3 x 48 - 1 x 2 / 3
=144-2/3
=142/3
=47.3333333 Answer

1)
40/1 - 4/5
Find the L.C.M.
200 - 4 / 5
196/5

2)
48/1 - 2/3
48*3 - 2/3
144-2/3
142/3

3)
98/1 - 3/7
98*7 - 3/7
686-3 / 7
683/7

Convert the whole number into a fraction with denom equal to the LCD of the other fractions.

1.) 40 - 4/5:
LCD = 5

200/5 - 4/5
(200-4)/5
196/5

formula is
(x/y) - (a/b)
= (xb - ay)/by
1) it is (40/1) -(4/5)
= (40*5 - 4*1)/(1*5)= (200-4)/5= 196/5
similarly do all other considering 1 as denomerator for whole number
