Clearly, the historical heritage is an important part of our collective memory, which must be shared and passed on from one generation to another. If not, our culture would be rootless. It's true that preserving old buildings cost us a lot. So we seem to lose an opportunity to make more money through redeveloping them into skyscrapers. But don't forget that a lot more old historical buildings have disappeared already in the past few decades. So is it really wrong to keep just "a few" old buildings that still stand? Also, keeping historical heritage can help attract tourists. At least it's more cost effective than building the "Hong Kong version" Disneyland!
