the answer is 7x^2-6x-6
you remove the parethesis then simply add like terms

(2x^2 + 3x - 8) + (5x^2 - 9x + 2)
= 2x^2 + 3x - 8 + 5x^2 - 9x + 2
= 2x^2 + 5x^2 + 3x - 9x - 8 + 2
= 7x^2 - 6x - 6

just add them up

7x^2-6x-6

Remove the parenthesis around both expressions

2x^2 + 3x - 8 + 5x^2 - 9x + 2
7x^2 + 3x - 8 - 9x + 2
7x^2 - 6x - 8 + 2
7x^2 - 6x - 6
