US citizen use US E-passport for travel HK

1st of all I do not agree with grandtom, no matter what US is going to protect their citizens.

1. It's doesn't matter you use US passport or HKID, i suggest to use HKID because you can stay in HK for longer period.

2. US immigration will not question you about what kind of ID to enter HK, because both of them are OK to use. And they are only care about what you having to enter USA.

I am also a US citizen and born in HK, visit HK with my US passport (old one) several times, maybe I can help you with your questions.
1. should I use my US E-passport to enter HK? or ... I can still use my HK Smart ID card to enter HK?
You can use either one. If you are using your HK ID card, then just in case something bad happened, the US government decide they recall all their ambassdors and citizens back to US, because you are not using your US passport, then you will not the first priority to onboard of the US plane.

2. if I use HK Smart ID card to enter HK, will US immigration officer doubt why I do not use US passport?
My friends and my family both using out HK ID card enter HK, and no problem at all when we were back to US.
Also, US government allow some countries immigrants have dual citizenship, HK is one of them.

you can use both documents to entry or leave HK...

the biggest difference is when you used HK ID into HK. you are voided the USA grovernment proction. anything happen to you or if you needed assistance from US grovernment. they can not and will not do it for you. in some case, that is important factor to a traveler.
