Love and Friendship a poem by Emily Bronte

Love is like the wild rose-briar,
Friendship like the holly-tree—
The holly is dark when the rose-briar blooms
But which will bloom most constantly?

The wild-rose briar is sweet in the spring,
Its summer blossoms scent the air;
Yet wait till winter comes again
And who will call the wild-briar fair?

Then scorn the silly rose-wreath now
And deck thee with the holly's sheen,
That when December blights thy brow
He may still leave thy garland green.

Love is not long lasting but temporary, while friendship is ever-green. At certain stages in our life, we may focus all our attention to our love, while ignoring our friends who support us behind our back. Always treasure friendship, and friends will be our lifetime support.

My simplified version of the poem:
Love is like a rose with thorns
Friendship is like an evergreen tree
This tree is dark while the rose blooms
But which will bloom for a longer time?(or permanently, constantly, forever)

The rose is sweet in spring
Its scent is sweet in summer
But in winter
no one calls the rose beautiful anymore (it withers)

Scorn/taunt/despise the silly rose now
and decorate yourself with the trees' leaves (sheen means bright and smooth)
when winter in December hits/spoils your forehead
with friendship, you can withstand the winter (your garland green)
