a hollow steel tube 100mm external diamter and 80mm internal diameter anda 3m long is subjected to a tensile load of 400 kN.Calculate the stress in the material and the amount the tube streches if young's modulus is 200000N/mm^2.

Stress = F/A

Strain = e/l


Base surface area, A = pi(0.1/2)2 - pi(0.08/2)2 = 2.83 X 10-3 m2

Stress = F/A = (400 X 103) / (2.83 X 10-3) = 1.41 X 108 Pa


Young modulus, E = 200 000 Nmm-2 = 2 X 1011 Nm-2

Mathematically,

Young modulus = Stress / Strain

E = (F/A)/(e/l)

e = (F/A)(l/E)

e = (1.41 X 108)[3/(2 X 1011)]

Extension, e = 2.12 X 10-3 m = 2.12 mm
