In Math you do not do equations from Right to Left (or from Left to Right for that matter). There is a predetermined order. In school we used the to say "Please Excuse My Dear Aunt Sally" which helps you remember:
Parenthesis: ( )
Exponential: Which includes X Squared or X^2, X^3, Square roots or X^.5 and so on.
Multiplication: Self Explanatory
Division: Self Explanatory
Addition: Self Explanatory
Subtraction: Self Explanatory
You always perform the operations in this order.
We do not know what X is, so cannot figure out the parenthesis but we can factor it out; which there is no exponential equation, so Multiplication is next.
So -8 * -2 = 16, and -8 * -5x = 40X; making the equation
7 + 16 + 40X = 23 + 40X
Make Sense?
Not sure what grade you are in, but Please Excuse My Dear Aunt Sally will apply all the way through now and any college math course you end up taking, so learning the order is in your best interest.
