Subtract 2x from each side
4x - 2 = 6

Add 2 to each side
4x = 8

Divide each side by 4
x = 8/4 = 2

collect like terms:

6x - 2x = 6 + 2
4x = 8
x = 2

basically you do this
6x-2=2x+6 (+2)
6x=2x+8
then
6x=2x+8 (-2x)
4x=8 (8/4)
x=2

First thing to do is get the Xs all on one side and the numbers all on one side. Remembering that if something switches sides over the equals then it changes signs, so a 2 becomes a -2 for example.

So 6x-2=2x+6 becomes 6x-2x=2+6 then just cancel out normally :)

6x-2x=2+6
4x=8
x=8 divided by 4
x=2 :)
