Solving for X, I'm lost. ?

Okay I am really confused!
I keep getting 33 for Y.
5x - 2y = 4
3x + y = 9
The answer is supposed to be 2, 3
I multiplied everything on the top row by 3 and everything on the bottom row by negative five.
and I keep getting 33 for Y.
I am lost.
Any help is appreciated!

Hi,

5x - 2y = 4
3x + y = 9

3(5x - 2y = 4)
-5(3x + y = 9)

15x - 6y = 12
-15x - 5y = -45
-----------------------
-11y = -33 <=I think you wrote -y here by mistake.
y = 3

If y = 3 and 3x + y = 9. then:
3x + 3 = 9
3x = 6
x = 2

The answer is (2,3). <==ANSWER

I hope that helps!! :-)

You have already reached upto the following equations

15x - 6y =12 &
-15x -5y = -45

Add the two equations, and you get
-11y = -33 thus y = 3
Plugging in this value in 3x + y =9, you get x =2

5x - 2y = 4
6x + 2y = 18-----ADD

11x = 22
x = 2

6 + y = 9
y = 3

x = 2 , y = 3
2008-10-06 5:27 pm
5x - 2y = 4
3x + y = 9 => y = 9 -3x

Substitute in top equation:
5x - 2(9 -3x) = 4 => 5x - 18 + 6x = 4 => 11x = 22
therefore x = 2

Substitute x into y: y = 9 - 3*2 = 3

Therefore x = 2 y = 3
2008-10-06 5:27 pm
5x - 2y = 4 (solve by using substitution)
3x + y = 9

3x + y = 9
y = 9 - 3x

5x - 2y = 4
5x - 2(9 - 3x) = 4
5x - 18 + 6x = 4
5x + 6x = 4 + 18
11x = 22
x = 22/11
x = 2

5x - 2y = 4
5(2) - 2y = 4
10 - 2y = 4
2y = 10 - 4
y = 6/2
y = 3

∴ x = 2 , y = 3

5x-2y=4
3x+y=9

multiply the 2nd equation by 2.

5x-2y=4
6x+2y=18........now add the two equations..

5x-2y+6x+2y=4+18

11x=22.....x=2.

substitute x=2 in any 1 of the equations say the first..

5(2)-2y=4

10-2y=4
-2y=-6
y=3...
2008-10-06 5:07 pm
5x - 2y = 4
3x + y = 9 * 2

5x - 2y = 4
6x +2y = 18

11x = 22

x = 2

5x - 2y = 4
10 - 2y = 4
2y = 6

y = 3

x=2 , y=3
