A steel bar 100mm X 12mm in cross-section and 3m long is subjected to an axial pull of 130kN.how much will it increase in lengh if the modulus of elasticity of the steel is 210000 Mpa (Ans - 1.5)

Young modulus of elasticity is defined as the ratio of the tensile stress applied to a body to the tensile strain produced.

Stress = F/A

Strain = e/l

Mathematically,

E = (F/A)/(e/l)

e = Fl / EA

e = (130 X 103)(3) / (210 000 X 106)(0.1 X 0.012)

Extension, e = 0.0015 m

e = 1.5 mm
