The sum of an integer and 5 times its square is 234. Find the integer.
I want the solution and answer. Thx a lot...
Um,,, i already know it is x+5^2=234. But the answer for this one is decimal. Not Integer. Anyone know why??
更新1:

sorry i typed wrong , it is x+(5)(x^2)=234 but i still get the decimal.

Write your equation in the form ax^2 + bx + c = 0

Use the quadratic solution formula
x = (-b + or - sqrt(b^2 - 4ac))/2a.

Your equation becomes 5x^2 + x - 234 = 0

plugging in a = 5, b = 1 and c = -234 gives
x = (-1 + or - sqrt(1 + 4680))/10 = (-1 + or - 68.4178)/10. Your quadratic has 2 solutions. using the + or - gives the two solutions.

If you are unfamiliar with the quadratic solution formula, ask the question and a bunch of people will show you how it is derived.

Assuming your wording came from the problem exactly, it's not x+5^2=234, it's x+5(x^2)=234. I forget how to do those...it's been awhile. Hopefully that helps, though.

because you set it up wrong

the sum of an integer and five times its square
x + (5)(x^2) = 234
