葉綠素是存在於植物，藻類和藍藻中的光合色素。

光合作用的第一步是光能被葉綠素吸收並將葉綠素離子化。產生的化學能被暫時儲存在三磷酸腺苷(ATP)中，並最終將二氧化碳和水轉化為氧氣和碳水化合物。葉綠素吸收大部分的紅光和藍光但反射綠光，所以葉綠素呈現綠色。

並非只有葉子才有葉綠素，葉柄的薄壁細胞都有葉綠素的存在。就是在一片葉子之中，也並非只有葉肉細胞有葉綠素，維管束鞘，表皮細胞和保衛細胞都有葉綠素。

Chlorophyll is a green pigment found in most plants, algae, and cyanobacteria. Its name is derived from Greek: χλωρός (chloros "green") and φύλλον (phyllon "leaf"). Chlorophyll absorbs light most strongly in the blue and red but poorly in the green portions of the electromagnetic spectrum, hence the green colour of chlorophyll-containing tissues like plant leaves.[1]
