Answer A and B are wrong as metal would not form a compound like XY2.
The answer is C and i would like to use carbon dioxide as an example
For C atoms, there are 4 electrons in the outermost shell.
For O atoms, there are 6 electrons in the outermost shell.

Each C atom needs 4 more electrons to become octet.
Each O atom needs 2 more electrons to become octet.
(Octet means the outermost shell is fully-filled by electrons.)

Thus 1 C atoms and 2 O atoms will share the electrons.
Each O atoms share 2 electrons to C atom and share 2 electrons from C atom
Therefore the X is group VI and Y is group VI.

C

Like CO2 or MgCI2

X is Group IV and then Y is Group VI

X is Group II and then Y is Group VII
