The original dimensions of a rectangular flower-bed are 25 m x40 m. Part of the flower-bed is constructed to become a path of uniform width around the floer-bed . If the new area of the flower-bed is 45% of the original area , find the width of the path.

Let x be the width of the flower bedThe area of the path = 25(40)(55%) = 550 sq. m.
2(25x) + 2(40-2x)x = 550
25x + 40x - 2x^2 = 275
2x^2 - 65x + 275 = 0
(2x - 55) (x - 5) = 0
x = 5 or 27.5 (rejected)
The width of the path = 5m
