what is different of early and earlier.

He had given several verbal warnings, but "earlier" this month he sent a memo to staff telling them they would be sacked if they spoke another language during the manufacture of medical laboratory supplies.

May I use "early" instead of earlier? If yes or not, please expain it in detail.

in this case, "earlier this month" means "較早前在這月". today is the 30th, it can mean the 26th, or 15th, or even the 1st of Sept, any day earlier than today within this month.

But if you use "early this month", it means "月初". it will be between 1st to the 10th of Sept.

Grammatically, both "earlier this month" or "early this month" are correct, but they carry different meanings.

early is merely an adjective, but earlier has a meaning of .....well, give u an example:
I am earlier than him.

But u can't say i am early than him.
