They are equal to each other. <<<<<

Conceptually think of a circular pizza with eight slices.

When you first take 1/4 of that pizza you end up with 2 slices. When you next take 1/2 of the 2 slices, you end up with one slice. That is 1/8 of th original pizza. That is 1/8 = 1/2 of 1/4 of the pizza.

When you first take 1/2 of that pizza you end up with 4 slices. When you next take 1/4 of the 4 slices you again end up with one slice. That again is 1/8 of
the pizza. That is 1/8 = 1/4 of 1/2 of the pizza.

Notice that 1 slice left from 8 means that we have multiplied 8 by 1/8 whether we used 1/2 then 1/4 or 1/4 then 1/2. So 1/4 then 1/2 is 1/8 and 1/2 then 1/4 is 1/8.

So, in this pizza example, you should be able to see why "of" in English means "multiplied by" or, if you prefer, "times" in mathematics.

The key here is to realize 1/4 of 1/2 means (1/4) times (1/2) and 1/2 of 1/4 means 1/2 times 1/4. Basically "of" always means "times". The (1/4) and (1/2) are from your problem, but this is true for any two numbers of which the first is a fraction. 1/2 of 4 = 2 = (1/2)*4

1) 1/4 of 1/2 = 1/4 times 1/2 = 1/8

2) 1/2 of 1/4 = 1/2 times 1/4 = 1/8

In multiplication the order of the two fractions, or a fraction and then another number, simply does not matter! Multiplication is order-independent (or commutative if you have been introduced to that concept).

1/2 x 1/4 =1/8
1/4 x 1/2 =1/8,they are equal.

while dealing with fractions, we are able to interpret the be conscious "of" as multiplication. case in point a million/2 of 6 is comparable to (a million/2) circumstances (6), it is comparable to 3. comparable take care of a million/2 of a million/4. a million/2 of a million/4 = (a million/2)(a million/4) = a million/8 a million/4 of a million/2 = (a million/4)(a million/2) = a million/8 they are the same.

They're equal. My eight y/o sister was able to answer this when I asked her. If you're planning to go in this rate, good luck with your academics! ;)

1)
1/4 x 1/2
= (1 x 1)/(4 x 2)
= 1/8

2)
1/2 x 1/4
= (1 x 1)/(2 x 4)
= 1/8
(they are equal.)

well it depends on that 1/4 of 1/2 what? and 1/2 of 1/4 what? you know?

you didn't say that we take these of same thing then it depends, 1/2 of 1/4 a button is greater than 1/4 of 1/2 atom lol

;)

They are the same.
e.g.
use 8 as the denominator.
half is
4/8, quarter of it is 1/8
a quarter is 2/8, half of that is 1/8.
it's the same!

same 1/2 * 1/4= 1/2*1/4=1/4*1/2

The multiplication is commutative

means that order of operations have no influence

1/2*1/4=1/4*1/2

Neither is greater, the two are equal
2008-09-29 8:08 am
SAME!

1/4 of 1/2 = 1/8

1/2 of 1/4 = 1/8

:)
