Basically you can take a fax message as a letter, but of course a letter is more formal, and too slow. So it is more appropriate to send a price quotation or reply to your client's enquries through a fax or email message. A contract is also acceptable, but if the contract is very important it seems not appropriate to be sent through the fax machine.

Regarding the content, the main difference is the information you need to include before DEAR XXX, e.g.- ust include your fax number and the receiver's fax number;- use TO: XXX (name of receiver) and FROM: XXX (name of sender);- may skill the address (but for a format one, better include address also) - must include no. of pages too (because the receiver may miss one or more pages, but a letter receiver is not likely to miss any page inside the envelope!)http://www.englishforums.com/English/HelpNeededForWritingAFax/bzbrj/post.htmYou may find a sample below:http://www.abusinessresource.com/Additional_Resources/Business_Letters_and_Forms/Fax_Cover/Contemporary-Fax-Example.html
