The jaguar (Panthera onca, pronounced in British English, in American English) is a New World mammal of the Felidae family and one of four "big cats" in the Panthera genus, along with the tiger, lion, and leopard of the Old World. It is the only Panthera found in the New World. The jaguar is the third-largest feline after the tiger and the lion, and on average the largest and most powerful feline in the Western Hemisphere. The jaguar's present range extends from Mexico across much of Central America and south to Paraguay and northern Argentina. Other than occasional visits from wandering jaguars from Mexico, the cat has largely been extirpated from the USA since the early 1970s.This spotted cat most closely resembles the leopard physically, although it is usually larger and of sturdier build and its behavioural and habitat characteristics are closer to those of the tiger. While dense rainforest is its preferred habitat, the jaguar will range across a variety of forested and open terrain. It is strongly associated with the presence of water and is notable, along with the tiger, as a feline that enjoys swimming. The jaguar is a largely solitary, stalk-and-ambush predator, and is opportunistic in prey selection. It is also an apex and keystone predator, playing an important role in stabilizing ecosystems and regulating the populations of prey species. The jaguar has developed an exceptionally powerful bite, even relative to the other big cats.[3] This allows it to pierce the shells of armoured reptiles and to employ an unusual killing method: it bites directly through the skull of prey between the ears to deliver a fatal blow to the brain.[4]

豹，也叫美洲虎，為第三大的豹屬動物，也是貓科中第三大的物種，外表型態的確和豹極為相似，但較粗壯，圓斑中有黑點，生態位也較像虎。是美洲地區唯一的豹屬動物。

體型和外表
體長162~182公分，體重53~110公斤，較極端的可達130千克。外表似虎豹的綜合體，肩臀較壯，黑斑中有原點，四肢和下側腹則形成較大的黑點，背脊的黑斑有形成一條線的趨勢。和豹一樣會有黑化的個體。(黑豹)

分佈和棲息環境
從美國佛羅里達州直到阿根廷中部，在雨林、沙漠和高山都有分佈，但主要偏好多水的環境。

習性及食性
領域性，可互相重疊，雄豹領域為雌豹二倍大，可能與多隻雌豹重疊，活動範圍大約二到三公里，最大可將近六十公里。會發出多種叫聲，表達情緒。美洲豹也是貓科中唯一以襲擊獵物頭骨作為捕獵技巧的動物，力大幾乎及得上獅，可拖著一頭牛長途行走。利齒亦有咬碎獵物頭骨及龜殼的能力。 為南美洲食物鏈上端，食物包括魚、樹懶、水豚、鹿、剌鼠、野豬、猴類、淡水龜等，甚至是尖牙利齒的鱷魚和體型龐大的森蚺。近年研究亦顯示美洲豹也有吃腐肉的習性。

生殖
母豹終年可生殖，但各地生殖高峰期不一，懷孕期大約90~110天，一胎大約一到四，仔幼豹二到十天後睜眼。

保護現狀
美洲豹被IUCN列為近危物種，其主要面臨的威脅是棲息地範圍的縮小。南美大多數國家都嚴格禁止捕獵美洲豹

體長 1.62 到 1.82 米，體重 56 至 96 千克，有啲可以重到 130 千克。外表似虎豹綜合體，肩臀較壯，黑斑中有圓點，四肢同下側腹則形成較大嘅黑點，背脊嘅黑斑有形成一條線嘅橫紋。同豹一樣會有黑化嘅個體。

由於美洲豹所居住嘅環境一直受到破壞，加上人類對皮毛嘅需求，傷害家畜等種種理由，令美洲豹數目日漸減少。

美洲豹係香港動植物公園嘅「鎮園之寶」，曾經養咗四隻，佢哋分別住響大型美洲豹籠舍內。個籠舍喺兒童遊樂場斜對面，喺1994年完成，面積比起原先位於獸籠入口旁邊，喺1976年完成嘅舊籠舍足足大成 4 倍。

2008年6月10日，最後一隻美洲豹「小花」老死，園方考慮到美洲豹需要更大嘅生存空間而唔再引入美洲豹來港。「小花」先後經歷「兩段情」：首任伴侶因為有先天性脊骨缺陷，被人道毀滅；繼任嘅「小黑」亦喺2003年死咗。
