STORAGE FLEXIBILITY
The function of storage will always be with us, but tomorrow's technology will change the way storage is performed. Information systems give us improved ability to analyze the inventory and sensibly utilize a constantly changing 80/20 rule. The storage layout should be designed to place the 20% of items that constitute 80% of activity in the places where they can be easily received and shipped. However, the layout that is perfect today will become imperfect tomorrow, and it is probable that aisle location and general storage patterns will change radically during the useful life of the building. Therefore, the storage equipment should be designed for flexibility, not just for efficiency. Pallet racks, shelving and storage cabinets are adjustable, portable, and capable of being moved to another location or sold.
Automatic storage and retrieval systems and carousels may be efficient, but they are far less flexible. Therefore, the equipment used in tomorrow's warehouse will emphasize flexibility rather than efficiency or maximum capacity. The tighter the warehouse layout, the greater the danger of loss to productivity and flexibility.
