An unequal treaty refers to a treaty which is signed by, among the manycountries bounded by the treaty, a party (parties) under military orpolitical duress from anther party (other parties). Since thebargaining powers of the parties involved are unequal, the resultingtreaty is unfair and brings about disadvantage to the sovereignty andinterest of the party (parties) under duress. Unequal treaties areusually the condition and result of ceasefire. A treaty signed to end awar is known as a peace treaty.
