Places to visit in Hamburg?

I am going to Hamburg for the 1st time for 3 weeks this weekend and was wanting to know the "must see" things to see and do both within the city and in the surrounding area.

I'm particularly interested in history and archaeology, and I enjoy hiking and the great outdoors.

I will have a car with me so transport is not a problem.

Yes 3 weeks is a long time. I am going for business but intend to use my limited free time to explore as much as possible!

VOW, 3 weeks would be very long for a hamburg visit. anyway, you may like to visit the harbour which is famous in hamburg,. there is a new harbour museum building at the moment, partly open right now. there is lubeck in the neighborhood area.

for archaeology : hamburg still got some old streets (though 90% was destroyed during the world wars.) after u arrive, get a hamburg tour book you will be introduced which area to go within the city. in a small suburb called ahrensburg there is a very old castle which you may find interesting.

there is a place call emsland, 3 hrs west from hamburg which is a very old town with an old castle. they've got moor they call it, fertile land from many many years ago. there is a museum there.

most suburbs of hamburg have small museum speaking history of their own place likes volsdorf, holsdorf. these places are within the S, or U BAHN (train/tram line).

if u drive north a bit outside hamburg, there is an area called travemunde which they call it little greece / italy with houses built on a landscape nearby the sea.

i've a crazy suggestion, try visit their cementaries. they are very old and nicely built. there is one in bremen, 2 hrs from hamburg, where they've got a very old cementary w/ very old architecture, stunning really.
