Algebra help (multi-step equations)?

2008-09-16 11:17 am
Just finished my algebra homework except one question. It's 2z + 9.75 - 7z = -5.15. If I'm supposed to combine like terms how do that? I just don't know what to do. Please help.

Sorry if it didn't make much sense. I'm still not great with English.

Combining like terms means to add coefficients together that are multiplied by the same variable.

for example

5a + 6a would combine to be 11a

5, 6, and 11 are coefficients of the variable a.

so in this problem...
add the 2z and the -7z together to get
-5z +9.75 = -5.15

Then subtract 9.75 from both sides
-5z = -14.9
then divide by -5
z = 2.98

remember to choose a best answer when you've resolved this question!

Calling it a "multistep equation" I think just confuses the issue. There is a simple goal: combine like terms to find a solution for the unknown. 8x - 2 -7x = -9 + 7x - 7x [ eliminate all the x's on one side with the property that a -a = 0. In this case 7x is our 'a'] 8x - 7x - 2 = x - 2 = -9 [ if you have 8 x's and take away 7 of them you only have one x remaining, if you have 7 x's and take away all 7 x's you have 0 remaining] x - 2 + 2 = -9 + 2 [ add 2 to both sides using the same property in the first line. notice you started with -a so you added a to get 0] x = -9 + 2 = -7

2z + 9.75 - 7z = -5.15

You simplify the terms in the left side of the equation since you can.

So, it becomes -5z + 9.75 = -5.15

You transpose 9.75 to the other side.

-5z = -5.15 - 9.75

-5z = -14.9

If you'd want to make your life easier, you can multiply both sides by 100 to move the decimal point to the right, therefore eliminating it. (You can do this if you hate decimals like me.)
Ex. 2x = 2.2
You can multiply both sides by 10. Therefore,
20x = 22
x= 22/20 or if simplified, 11/10

Another example is 2x = 2.2222222
You multiply it by 10000000 to eliminate the decimal point, and then find the value of x, and blah blah. It makes stuff a lot easier.

ANYWAY. -5z = -14.9
You multiply both sides by 10, so it becomes -50z=-149
z= 2 and 49/50
if your teacher doesn't accept fraction form, the decimal form is 2.98, just as the others said.

I hope I helped. :D

So your trying to find like terms.....
I think this helps:

2z + 9.75 - 7z ---> 1st combine like terms
2z - 7z = -5z ----> The answer is negative five z
-5z + 9.75 = ----> The answer is 4.75z

Then the answer is 4.75z
I hope my solutions helps you.......

2z + 9.75 - 7z = -5.15
2z - 7z = -5.15 - 9.75
-5z = -14.9
z = -14.9/-5
z = 14.9/5 (2.98)
2008-09-16 11:29 am
2z + 9.75 - 7z = -5.15
Or 2z - 7z = -5.15 - 9.75
Or -5z = -14.90
Or 5z = 14.90
Or z = 14.90/5
Or z = 2.98

the like terms in this equation is the z. We can see that there is
2z-7z+9.75 That will then become

-5z+9.75=-5.15

then you find 5z by itself. because its +9.75, -9.75 from the right side. so then it would say:

-5z=-14.9

then -14.9/5

therefore z=2.98

combine first like terms
2z-7z +9.75= -5.15
or -5z = - 9.75-5.15
or - 5z= - 14.90
or 5z=14.90
or z= 14.90/5=2.98----- ans
2008-09-16 11:23 am
2z + 9.75 - 7z = -5.15

Add the two z terms together:
-5z + 9.75 = -5.15

Subtract 9.75 from both sides:
-5z + 9.75 - 9.75 = -5.15 - 9.75
-5z = -14.9

Multiply both sides by -1:
5z = 14.9

Divide both sides by 5:
5z/5 = 14.9/5
z = 2.98

And that's the answer.

Are you trying to find the value of z?

2z + 9.75 - 7z = -5.15
2z - 7z = -5.15 - 9.75
-5z = -14.9
z = 2.98
