要軟化硬水，方法包括：煮沸(只適用於暫時硬度)、利用離子交換器(但會產生含鈉離子的水，對心臟不利)、加入石灰和蒸餾等。

硬水與否對是否能直接從水龍頭喝水並無直接關係；能否如此取決於食水源頭水質、過濾工序是否足夠和供水設備衛生程度等，最重要是食水中有害物質和有害微生物的含量。由於很多石灰岩地區有充沛的地下水供應，而地下水本身不會含有很多微生物，因此相對於河水只須簡單處理便可飲用。
