a+ 1/a + 1/a + 1/a ..... = x. Therefore,a + 1/x = x
x^2 = ax + 1
x^2 - ax -1 = 0
x = [a +/- sqrt(a^2 +4)]/2

Note: x=[ a - sqrt(a^2 +4)]/2 is rej. if a > 0 because sqrt(a^2 + 4) > a.

a + 1/x = x. Multiply all terms by x, we get ax + 1 = x^2 (x^2 means x square). This is a quadratic equation with roots as stated. sqrt means square root.
