I didn't realize until a moment ago that this has to be simplified, could somebody help me out and explain how to simplify it? I think i have a good idea of how to do the actual problem, but not how to simplify it..

You can just drop the parentheses from the 1st term, (5x^4 + 3x^3 - 4), when dropping from (7x^2 - 9x + 9), you should negate all the terms inside:

5x^4 + 3x^3 - 4 - 7x^2 + 9x - 9 = 5x^4 + 3x^3 - 7x^2 + 9x - 13

Sum up all the terms with the same power of x.
