捩斷層是斷層兩盤沿斷層面在水平方向上相對位移。

捩斷層是斷層兩盤沿斷層面在水平方向上相對位移。



若斷層的範圍廣大，外力使兩個類型相同的大斷層中間的地塊相對上升，兩邊的地塊相對下降，隆起的塊狀高山，便稱為斷塊山（block mountain），亦稱地壘，如中國廬山和西德黑森林（Black Forest）地區。



若外力使兩個類型相同的大斷層中間的地塊相對下降，兩邊的地塊相對上升，由此而形成的低陷谷地稱為裂谷（rift valley），亦稱地塹，如中國汾河流域和西德萊茵河谷地（Rhine Valley），規模較大的則有東非大裂谷。



此外，垂直的斷層面會形成陡壁，如雲南昆明的龍門；一連串的斷層會形成梯級狀的下降盤，稱為階狀斷層（stepped fault）。



香港的斷層構造，主要為東北--西南走向，其次為西北--東南走向。前者主要有荔枝角﹣赤門海峽斷裂，及鴨州至青龍頭的斷裂；後者有梅子林至中文大學的斷裂。此外尚有不少小規模的斷層及斷層碎石帶，並往往成為河道或海峽。
