Apart from my current driving experience in HK, I've also been driving in the US and Australia for years when I studied there. Let me share some these experience with you.

(1) Compared to many developed cities, most streets / parking spaces in HK are much narrower. This makes driving technique important because it may require you to do back up, parallel parking, 3-point turns, etc.

(2) Vehicles in HK are over-crowded, so the government sets up many different types of restricted zones that forbid drivers to stop/ park/ drop-off. And there're various zones that only allow certain type of vehicles to drive-in. It's important that you memorize different types of signs and zones in HK.

(3) Most streets in HK are not only narrow, but are one-way streets. It's important for you to choose maps that show the driving direction of each street, and show either a street is one-way or two-way. In HK, sometimes it takes you more than 20 minutes just to find the right route to get to the destination just on the opposite side of the road because of one-way streets and heavy traffic jam.

(4) Most street-name signs in HK are originally designed for pedestrians so it can be difficult for you in locate a certain street in an area you don’t familiar. If you love to go to new places all the time, I recommend you buying a GPS. It costs you about HK$2,000 and it has voice navigations.

(5) I recommend drivers in HK to keep 40% of their eye sights on rear/side mirrors because you can avoid accidents at others fault by updating the traffic condition in all directions surrounding your car in every 1-2 seconds.

Hope it helps!! Enjoy driving in HK!

I am a driver.
I think if all drivers in Hong Kong follow the traffic rules, no speeding, no cutting line without proper indication.... etc. There will be no traffic accidents.
But many professional drivers (taxi, van, trucks) always drive inconsiderably, like to cut line without indication, ring horns ....very terrible.
-Be not to follow car too closely.
-Aware of the camera for shooting speeding cars. It really works very frequently.
-check all the tyres and before drive
-must turn on lights while driving in heavy rain and do not close to the front car.
-be careful if you visit Causeway Bay and find an indoor carpark, space in Elizabeth House is terrible.
