A heavy steel cable of length l and mass m passes over a small massless, frictionless pulley. If a length y hangs on one side of the pulley (so l-y hangs on the other side). Assuming the cable starts from rest with length y1 on one side of the pulley, determine the velocity v1 at the moment the whole cable has fallen from the pulley.

By the law of conservation of energy

Loss of G.P.E. = Gain of K.E.

mgy1 = 1/2 mv12

v12 = 2gy1

v1 = √2gy1
