u can try to connect ur computer to a external monitor, if u can see the external screen is on, then means ur monitor is dead.

if u are using XP, u can right click the mouse on ur destop, click properties, this wil bring up the display content, at tab SETTING, choose the monitor section to 1 or 2 and see if ur notebook monitor is on or not, if it is not on, then means the monitor is dead.

if the notebook monitor is dead and ur computer is not in warrantee, it is expensive to replace a new one... u may call HP and they will quote you a price.
