A single band of light of width 1mm was first observed.As the slit became narrower, diffraction occured and the width of ligh beam seen on the screen widened.
Further narrowing the slit gave a prominent diffraction pattern with alternate bright and dark fringes.
Finally, nothing was observed when the slit was completely closed.
