What's wrong with the following sentence?

"I have five people in my family."

Can I use " There are five members in my family." instead.

Thank you.

The word "People" does not specify the relationship between you and them. So eventhough there is nothing grammatically wrong with your sentence, it is not logical.
Your sentence "There are five members in my family" is correct. Alternatively you can say:
I have five family members.

You can say 'I have a borther and a sister.'
but we seldom say 'I have five people in my family.'

Instead we should use 'There are five members in my family.' which you suggest.
參考: Myself
