Chemistry about sewage treatment

Sewages from a chemical plant contain acidified potassium permanganate solution and potassium dichromate solution. In order to remove them, excess sodium sulphite solution was added first, then followed by excess sodium hydroxide solution.

Explain the chemistry involved for the above treatment and suggest what final treatments are needed for the sewage.
