I am using * for the multiplication symbol.

The least common denominator (lcd) is 5 * 7 = 35

I will now multiply both sides of the equation by the lcd.

Side Note: This use of the lcd is different from the way it is used when adding fractions giving the lcd to get the denominators of the fractions the same. This is an important technique to remember.

[(x - 5) * 5] + [(x + 8] * 7 = (9 x 5)

(5x - 25) + (7x + 56) = 45

I will combine the x terms on the left hand side of the equation and move the constants to the right hand side of the equation.

5x + 7x = 45 + 25 - 56 = 70 - 56 = 14

12x = 14

x = 14/12

x = 7/6 <<<<<

5(x-5)/35+7(x+8)/35=5*9/35 -->
5x-25+7x+56=45
12x=14
x=14/12=7/6

Multiply everything by 7
(x-5) + 7*(x+8)/5 = 9
Then multiply everything by 5
5*(x-5) + 7*5*(x+8) = 9*5
Then expand the equation by simplifying
5x - 25 + 35*(x+8) = 45
5x - 25 + 35x + 280 = 45
Then put all of the x values on one side and all of the just numbers on one side
5x + 35x = 45 + 25 - 280
(when you move things to the other side you use the opposite sign they had on the original side)
Then simplify some more
40x = -210
x = -210/40
x = -6

Hope this helps!

Do you mean :- (x - 5) / 7 + (x + 8) / 5 = 9 / 7 ??????? 5x - 25 + 7x + fifty six = forty 5 12x = 14 x = 14 / 12 x = 7 / 6 As you have typed the question , it reads :- x - (5/7) + x + (8/5) = 9/7 35x - 25 + 35x + fifty six = forty 5 70x = 14 70x = 14 x = a million / 5

5x - 25 + 7x + 56 = 45
12x = 14
6x = 7
x = 7/6

(x - 5)/7 + (x + 8)/5 = 9/7
35[(x - 5)/7 + (x + 8)/5] = 35[9/7]
5(x - 5) + 7(x + 8) = 5(9)
5*x - 5*5 + 7*x + 7*8 = 45
5x - 25 + 7x + 56 = 45
5x + 7x = 45 + 25 - 56
12x = 14
x = 14/12
x = 7/6
