Red blood on the stool usually indicates bleeding in the rectum or at the anus (usually indicative of hemorrhoids or something in that area). The colonoscopy will check for that and other areas of the large intestine from the rectum, up the descending colon, across the transverse colon and down the right side ascending colon to the cecum and appendix area. If you opted to not be sedated you would see (and remember) the areas and anything the doctor says during the procedure. The most interesting thing is that the area where your internal hemorrhoids are won't be look at until the colonoscopy is almost done when the doctor gets the scope to do a 180 degree flip and look backwards in the rectum. A fascinating experience if you have an inquisitive nature about you. I have never been sedated for a colonoscopy and I have never regretted my decision.
