The equation of the reaction between cold sodium hydroxide solution and chlorine is:
2NaOH + Cl2 → NaCl + NaOCl + H2O
This is because Cl2 reacts with water to give two acids, HCl and HOCl:
Cl2 + H2O ≒ HCl + HOCl ...... (1)
Both HCl and HOCl can be neutralized by NaOH to give two salts.
HCl + NaOH → NaCl + H2O ...... (2)
HOCl + NaOH → NaOCl + H2O ...... (3)
The overall equation can be obtained by adding up equations (1), (2) and (3).

However, if sodium hydroxide is hot, the equation becomes:
6NaOH + 6Cl2 → 5NaCl + NaClO3 + 3H2O
This equation is included in AL syllabus.
