Prussia started the German unification movement in the second half of the 19th century. To compete the unification, it fought a war against France in 1870-1871. This was the Franco-Prussian War. France was defeated and was forced to pay a huge indemnity and cede territories. The Gemans also announced the birth of the German Empire at a French palace, the Palaca of Versailles.
